Self-Assesment

This fall semester, I have taken English 21001, writing for the Humanities and Arts with professor kelly Mclntosh. This course was a hybrid course which means that it was online and in class sessions. It was my first time taking a hybrid course. When I had online sessions, I had a discussion among all the students in my class and we would respond to each other’s discussion posts. In this semester, I have explored the following genres of reading: opinion editorial from different publications and online articles from City College of New York library’s database. More importantly, I have also explored the following genres of writing: opinion editorial, visual essay, critical analysis, reflective piece and responses for discussion posts.

This course allowed me to improve as a writer and also explore different types of genres in writing. I always had a misconception that writing is just for a famous writers who are just naturally good at writing. However, from this course this misconception had fell apart. Writing is not just a skill that a good writer has, and they are born to write well. However, writing is the ability to use my own thoughts and put it on paper. In addition to that, being able to express my feelings as a writer through many different genres. There were there major assignment that I have done which includes: opinion editorial, visual essay and a critical analysis essay. There were many objectives that is expected in this course which I composed it into all of the major writing assignments. Some of the objectives include: strengthening my rhetorical knowledge, engaging in analysis, understanding the convention of different genres and finally formulation a stance in order to compose effective writing.

For the first assignment, it was an opinion editorial response. During the first day of class, as far as I can remember is that we had to read Britzer rhetorical situation. This assignment helped me improve my strategy of reading and engaging in analysis of any rhetorical situations. We had to read an opinion editorial from any publication. When doing this assignment, it was difficult in the beginning but after writing my first option editorial I was able to improve on that skill.

In this course we have done various ways of improving our writing. We have enhanced strategies for reading, drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment. These strategies help me improve throughout the semester.writing needs to be taken out, or need to be inserted in any of the section. I think that is fine because I can learn from my mistakes and improve on it. When I edit, I read my papers outloud to myself or to one of my family members. With this method I am able to catch my mistakes a lot faster. I consider myself not a good proofreader because my english vocabulary is not strong. To help myself, I went to the writing center. But not all the time I can find a tutor, so at that time I would try my best. They would give me worksheets that guides you through all the necessary things that i need help with.

Overall, from the beginning to the end, I have learned that writing takes time, it is a process that needs time to go through all the aspects of it. I also learned that there is always room for more improvement, and something new that show up in front of your face.
